professional locksmithA lock must be in a good condition to provide appropriate security. There are situations when you need to replace or re-key your locks. A professional locksmith can guide you in which avenue will best serve your needs. You will need to re-key or replace locks in the following situations:

  • You have moved into a new house

  • You have renovated your home and need to upgrade security

  • You want to change the key to access your home

  • Your keys are lost or stolen

Tips for Easy Installation of Locks

 While purchasing a new lock

  • Take the existing key to the store to get a compatible lock if you want same key to operate all locks.

  • Check the diameter of the holes currently cut out of your door to select a new door lock accordingly.

Measure the replacement lock

  • Doorknobs connect through a hole in the door.

  • Measure the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of this hole. This measurement is called setback and is usually 2 3/8 inches or 2 ¾ inches.

  • Purchase a lock with the same setback.

Replacing the latch

  • Remove the screws from the door knob from the interior side of door. Then pull the door knobs off the door from both sides.

  • Remove the two screws from the latch plate on the edge of the door and remove the latch.

  • Insert the new latch into the opening with the narrowed side facing the direction you will push the door to close it.

Install Door Knobs

  • Install both knobs by sliding the spindle through the opening in the latch.

  • Arrange the two long screws from the inside knob into the cylinders on the exterior knob. Tighten the screws.

  • Remove the two screws holding the strike plate in place on the door jamb and install the new one in the same position.

  • Open and close the door multiple times to ensure latch aligns properly with the strike plate and the knob turns smoothly.

Install the Deadbolt

  • Remove the old deadbolt similarly as you did the door knobs. Insert the new bolt into the opening on the edge of the door and fix it to the door with the provided screws.

  • Insert the exterior part of the lock into the door by passing the long metal piece through the opening in the center of the bolt.

  • Fix the interior part of the deadbolt lock by inserting two provided long screws through the interior plate, the two screw holes in the bolt, and into the exterior side of the lock.

  • Tighten the screws using a screwdriver.

  • Install the strike plate and test that the deadbolt is working properly

Consider re-keying

If the lock is in good condition, consider re-keying instead of replacing. Re-keying means changing the tumblers of a lock cylinder with tumblers of different sizes. When you re-key a lock, a new key corresponding to the new tumblers, is needed to open the door.

A locksmith can re-key your locks for a much lower cost than full lock replacement.

Call a Locksmith

Installing locks is easy if you are handy. If not, call a locksmith. Sometimes replacements are complicated and/or time consuming for someone not familiar with the hardware. Replacing locks yourself can save you money but only when you can properly do it. Otherwise, it will cost you much more than a locksmith would have plus the time you spend on it.
